A market morning, without the rush

Use the Onancock Market as a starting point for seasonal shopping, a small picnic or a thoughtful gift.

Check which market is taking place

The Onancock Market’s own website distinguishes seasonal market arrangements, including different venues and special dates. Check the current listing before setting out; a summer address or schedule should not be carried into a winter visit.

Decide whether the market is your main morning activity or a short stop. Leave room to talk to sellers if that is why you are going, and avoid putting a timed museum visit immediately afterwards. The photograph on this page shows Onancock’s streetscape, not a live view of market stalls.

Shop for what you can use

Begin with the next meal and the facilities at your accommodation. Fresh ingredients are a different purchase from food ready to eat. Ask how something should be stored and when it is best used, especially if your next stop is a long drive.

Bring a manageable bag and suitable storage for what you intend to buy. Do not assume every vendor offers the same payment options. Ask before photographing a stall closely, and step aside after buying so other shoppers can reach the display.

Build a picnic around a place

Choose a permitted place to eat before shopping for a picnic. Check seating, waste disposal and whether the group will need utensils or drinking water. A scenic waterfront does not automatically provide public tables or permission to occupy a working dock.

Keep the menu simple enough to carry and serve. Buy portions that match the group rather than filling the bag with food that will spend the rest of the day in a warm vehicle. If the weather changes, have a suitable place to eat indoors.

Give gifts a little thought

When buying a food gift, consider the recipient’s tastes, allergies, storage and onward journey. Ask the seller about packaging and ingredients; handmade or local does not tell you everything needed to transport it.

Continue with a town walk or a meal out, leaving heavy or perishable purchases at your accommodation first where practical. A good market visit fits the rest of the day.
