Tangier begins with confirmed transport
How to research an island visit without relying on an outdated ferry timetable.

Read the operator’s current notice first
Checked 24 September 2026: the Tangier–Onancock Ferry website displays a notice that the service is currently suspended. The same page contains older service descriptions, and other visitor pages still advertise sailings. Do not treat that older detail as confirmation of a departure.
Before booking accommodation or activities around a crossing, contact the operator and ask whether transport is available for your exact date. This guide is not a live service-status feed and does not announce a resumption.
Ask about the whole journey
If a provider confirms a trip, establish the departure point, check-in time, return service, payment arrangements and weather policy. Ask what happens if the return cannot operate and whether luggage, bicycles or other equipment need prior agreement.
For an overnight visit, coordinate transport with your host before making separate commitments. For a day visit, work backwards from the confirmed return rather than assuming you can leave whenever you choose.
Keep the island day considerate
Tangier is a community where people live and work. Plan to use public visitor facilities, respect private property and ask before photographing residents closely. A small place is not an attraction whose daily life stops for a tour.
Choose a small number of activities that fit the available time and the group’s mobility. Check food, restroom and transport arrangements with the actual providers rather than relying on a long-standing directory entry.
Have a satisfying alternative
Until transport is confirmed, keep an Onancock waterfront visit, Ker Place or a road-based Eastern Shore outing in the plan. An alternative should be worth doing for its own sake.
